Your First Day at School

What to Expect on Day One

Starting at a new school in a different country can be nerve-wracking, but Irish language schools are used to welcoming international students and will make you feel at ease. Here's what typically happens.

Arrival & Registration

  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early on your first day.
  • Bring your passport, booking confirmation, and proof of accommodation.
  • You'll fill out registration forms and receive your student ID.

Placement Test

Most schools start with a placement test to determine your English level. This usually includes:

  • A written grammar/vocabulary test (multiple choice, 30-60 minutes)
  • A short speaking assessment with a teacher

Don't stress about the test — it's not pass/fail. It simply helps the school place you in the right class. Be honest about your level; being in a class that's too easy or too hard won't help you improve.

Typical School Day

  • Morning classes: Usually 9:00am - 1:00pm (a minimum of 15 hours/week is required to keep your student immigration permission — Stamp 2 — and this applies to everyone, whether or not you needed a pre-travel visa)
  • Afternoon classes: Some schools offer afternoon slots from 1:30pm - 5:30pm
  • Class size: Usually 10-15 students from different countries
  • Breaks: 15-minute break mid-morning

What to Bring

  • Notebook and pen (some schools provide a textbook; others ask you to buy one)
  • Your phone for language apps and dictionary lookups
  • Water bottle and a snack for break time
  • Your student ID (after registration)

Top Tips

  • Speak English from day one, even with other Brazilians. This is the fastest way to improve.
  • Don't be shy about making mistakes — everyone in your class is learning.
  • Introduce yourself to classmates from other countries. The multicultural experience is one of the best parts.
  • Ask your teacher if you don't understand something — they expect questions.
